Pan African Sanctuary Alliance
PASA.org

sanctuary PASA is the largest association of wildlife sanctuary centers in Africa, with 23 organizations in 13 countries. The combination of their global network, their members' local expertise, and donation support uniquely positions the Alliance to rescue and defend great apes and monkeys. These sanctuaries are essential for primates that cannot be safely released, providing them with lifetime care — a commitment that can span 40 to 50 years for each ape.

school roof In 2000, the increasing number of primate rescue and rehabilitation centers in Africa was collectively caring for hundreds of chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and other endangered primates. Many directors and leaders of chimpanzee sanctuaries realized they were facing similar challenges and could benefit by learning from each other, so they arranged a meeting in Uganda to bring them together for the first time. The directors of the organizations agreed there was a need for improved ongoing communication, and as a result the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance was formed.

student graduating PASA members have significantly expanded efforts to protect critical forest habitats and have been instrumental in the creation of new protected areas across the continent. By bolstering partnerships with law enforcement agencies, PASA and our members have enhanced local capacity to tackle wildlife crime effectively, ensuring a more robust defense against illegal activities that threaten primate populations.

This grant will cover the cost of providing food for over 600 apes and monkeys at PASA member centers across Africa, keeping them healthy and safe as they undergo rehabilitation.
